An art director’s eye on architecture

I started my career as a trained graphic designer and spent 15 years as an art director developing concepts, building visual identities, art directing shoots, designing magazine covers and layouts for major Australian publications, producing corporate annual reports, creating campaigns for print and social media, and translating complex ideas into clear, compelling visual communication. Conceptual thinking was at the core of everything: understanding the idea behind a brief and finding the strongest way to express it.

Every shoot is approached the way I’d approach a design brief: What’s the story? What’s the feeling? What does this project need people to understand? I take time before every shoot to understand the site and the design narrative a practice is trying to communicate. The result is films that go beyond pretty footage to capture something more essential - the atmosphere of a space, the way light and movement bring a design to life, and the human (and animal) stories that give a building meaning.

Specialist architectural filmmaker

I work exclusively with architecture and design practices. I don’t take on weddings, corporate videos, or brand content. This focus means I understand the industry deeply, the way architects think about their work, what makes a strong award submission, how to coordinate access to occupied buildings, and how to capture a project at its best.

I’m also a fully CASA-licensed aerial cinematographer, holding both a Remote Operator’s Certificate (ReOC) and an Aviation Reference Number (AROC) with access to geo-restricted airspace in Australia and across the world. Aerial cinematography is included as standard on every shoot, it’s not an add-on or a separate contractor.

Who I work with

I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the world’s most respected architecture firms: Zaha Hadid Architects COX Architecture • Smart Design Studio • fjcstudio • Collins and Turner • McGregor Coxall • Aspect Studios • Arcadia Landscape Architecture • Woods Bagot • John McAslan + Partners

Notable projects include: Western Sydney International Airport • Darlington Public School (2024 World Architecture Festival Building of the Year) • Yellamundie Library (IFLA Public Library of the Year finalist) • Barangaroo Station Park (AILA National Award of Excellence) • Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway • Central Station • Waterloo Metro • M12 Motorway • Bundarra

How it works

Every project starts with a proper conversation, not a generic brief form. I ask the questions that get to the heart of what your project is about, and I give you options throughout the process that make it easy to articulate what you want. Clients tell me I make the briefing process feel effortless.

From there, I handle everything: creative direction, filming, aerial cinematography, editing, colour grading, and delivery in whatever formats you need (web, social, award submission, broadcast).

I shoot on professional cinema cameras with stabilisation and a commercial-grade aerial platform. Post-production includes full editing, professional colour grading, and sound design. Two rounds of revisions are included as standard.

I’d love to hear about your next project.

“I love working with Ruth because we’re both communicators but use different mediums to share our message. Sometimes it’s hard to brief a technical expert but Ruth has a way of getting around this. By giving options throughout the process, she helps me articulate the outcome I’d like to achieve and she’s able to comprehend the desired result”.
